We defined the 'analog' generation as people (usually of the older generation) who have access to different forms of technology, but either do not know how to use it or aren't aware that they can use it in different ways. Student-led societies will help the analog generation members enter the digital world and become "digital grandchildren."Project PlanningWho?Ages, types of students, type of course(s) or subjects that this could appropriately be used with.We want to target this project to (teenage) international school students like us who are relatively comfortable using technology. The global nonprofit student-led societies can help local members of the analog generation. Grandchildren who live far away from their grandparents can contact a student society near their grandparents' house and ask for help - this system can build a true sense of a global family. Any student member can be a "digital grandchild." What? What will they be doing? What is the social issue? What are the outcomes? How would the students be assessed? We will establish 'digital leap' societies in various schools. The students who join these societies will connect to members of the 'analog' generation who they know personally. This will address the gap between generations, since the students will teach the analog generation how to express their thoughts using web 2.0. This will lead to better communication between people of different ages, and allow for sharing of experiences. Once members of the analog generation are comfortable with web 2.0, they can in turn reach out to other members of the analog generation - this will provide a domino effect. When? What time of year (state in months). Will it have simultaneous events? Consider holidays, etc. Is there a "perfect" time for this (also think about the social issue you have in mind.)Since this project depends on student involvement, most of it will have to take place during the school year as an extracurricular. It will be an activity that combines technology and service to bridge the digital divide. If the program is received with interest and enthusiasm, perhaps more intense programs can be hosted during summer break. Where? What type of websites and tools will you use. Hyperlink to the tools and give examples of what would be done. How will students interact? Where will they be sharing, working, collaborating? All tools used.We plan to have a central 'digital leap through time' website. This will serve as a base for the program and connect the students who are involved in this project from all over the world. The website will not only inform the students how to begin teaching members of the 'analog' generation, but will also include tutorials that could be used in teaching. The site could also connect members of the analog generation who can relate to each other as they learn more about technology and web 2.0 together. Why?Why is this project important. Include statistics and facts about why this is a needed project. "Sell" this to the world about why it is an issue that should be addressed and why this particular project can make a difference.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/5146222.stm http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm As the above links suggest, the generation gap is becoming increasingly apparent as the 'digital' generation advances while the 'analog' generation is left behind. As new technology is created and introduced every day, the analog generation find it increasingly hard to keep up. This project will help them stay up to date and connect them to the digital world. Also, many people in the analog generation are seniors who have a lot of time on their hands - connecting to the digital generation will provide company, entertainment as well as a great learning experience. Meanwhile, the digital generation can use this opportunity to learn about the older generation's experiences and perspectives. All of this will also serve to connect generations within families, providing a greater sense of togetherness. How?Any other implementation items that you wish to share. What challenges will this project face as schools look at implementing it? How will you overcome obstacles and arguments against this project or methods used? How will it be managed and facilitated by teachers? Will students be leaders? How will you know if this is done well? How will you encourage student participation? How will you motivate? How will you know if the project is successful?a) If the 'analog' generation members have personal access to computers, the students can visit them to teach them basic uses of the computer (how to turn it on, e-mail, maybe even skype). Once they have learnt the basics, students can then interact with them online and introduce them to more advanced technology seen in Web 2.0. b) If they do not have access to computers, students can invite the analog generation members to visit and use the school computer facilities. This would have to be approved by the schools, but we expect the schools support us in the interest of bridging the generation gap. The FutureWhat needs to be done next? Are there any topics that need to be researched further to implement this idea? When we are finished building a prototype Digital Leap website, we will need testers from the analog generation who can give us feedbacks.
